Structural Engineering

Banner Fort Collins Medical Center

JVA was the structural engineer of record for the 146,000 square foot Banner Fort Collins Medical Center. This project consisted of three interconnected buildings: a one-story outpatient clinic, a two-story bed tower and diagnostic and treatment facility, and a one-story central utility plant with loading dock. JVA worked closely with the architect and mechanical engineer in order to issue a steel package for bid at the completion of the design document phase and to issue a foundation permit package in advance of the building permit. This was the first project in Colorado to use SidePlate®, a proprietary bolted steel moment frame connection. The incorporation of this patented connection system allowed JVA to reduce column and beam sizes when compared to a traditional moment frame system and eliminated costly labor and field inspections for complete joint penetration field welds. The use of this system helped the construction team to make up unanticipated weather delays and to keep the project on schedule while providing a completely open floor plate without shear walls or braced frames to allow for future flexibility.
